You stick it in dull, it comes out sharp
July 9, 2007
I'm a big fan of amateur-proof tools, so I'm excited to mention the Work Sharp—an electronic blade tool sharpener that hones chisels, gouges, plane irons, putty knives, etcetera, with all the simplicity of an electronic pencil sharpener.
The (lengthy) video above explains how it works, but here's the gist: you just push the blade up a chute against a spinning abrasive wheel, grinding off burrs and cutting a mirrored new edge.
I know there are other automatic sharpeners out there, but this $129 model requires no moisture, it cools the steel as it sharpens, and the guide on the chute effectively prevents you from making a mistake. Which I, as an admitted amateur, am prone to do.

I can't wait until tools come out that are not only amateur-proof, but retard proof as well. Some day we'll just turn a murder of robots (like crows, this is what groups of robots are called) to do all our house chores and we can sit back and drink girlie drinks.
