Sometimes a newel post is just a newel post

But when that post happens to be attached to Sigmund Freud's banister, shown above, I can't help but think it's compensating for the size of the spindles.
I found the banister in Dr. Johnson's Doorknob and Other Significant Parts of Great Men's Houses, a charming little hardback of historic details.
We once ran an article telling you how to fix a wobbly newel, but I wonder if Freud would have made a similar diagnosis: is the problem simply a loose screw, or some deep trauma it suffered as a young tree?
