This just in from Harry Sawyers at the 2008 International Builder's Show in Orlando, Florida:

   

Vermont American added a threaded tip to their spade bit, so the bit pulls itself through the board and drills a faster hole. How much faster? Watch VA rep Rick Bauer's demonstration to find out.

I've always been wary of the bits with the screws in the end of them. Do they work alright in a hardwood? I've always been worried the screw would pull to fast causing the bit to jam.

Good video. Looks like a great idea if you are drilling holes from a standing position like Rick is. I am not so sure if I would want the drill bit to pull me in if I am making new holes in exsisting studs or ceilings though, I like to take it slow in most cases. I wonder if being faster takes away durability?

Greenlee has had these bits for some time...the only problem is they can bog down your drill it it doesn't have the horsepower to handle the increase torque.
