Mighty Putty: Does it work?
Every time I see Billy Mays shill the magical Mighty Putty, I have to change the channel before I order some for everybody I know.
Maybe I'm just a simple-minded sucker, and the sight of the putty repairing everything from broken garden tools to cracked plaster (to damaged tile, to pinhole plumbing leaks...) is just too tempting to refuse.
Or maybe it's that he doubles then triples his offer.
That Billy Mays, man, he's hard to resist.
Predictably, I've accepted an invitation to an upcoming Mighty Putty press event, at which I'll put the screws to him on this miracle epoxy.
In the meantime: Anybody tried Mighty Putty? How'd it do?
After the jump: Watch the seductive, screaming ad.
Just had to share the photo mentioned in the comment, via Ad Age. Thanks, Will.

I purchased mighty putty and waited 7 weeks to be very disappointed. I tried it on everything that the commercial used it on and it did not I repeat did not work on any of them. It got hard and did not hold anything or stop leaks or anything. All you can use it for is a paperweight and it would not work very good at that either., I used the stuff you buy at the hasdware store and yes its cheaper and it does work. I used it when I put a sway bar on my trailer just to hold pieces in place so I could drill and couldn't get the pieces off when I finished drilling the holes. I think they call it steel putty not positive but I found it at Walmart in automotive along with the other epoxy. Do not buy MIGHTY PUTTY IT DOES NOT WORK
No, I could not get Mighty Putty to bond to metal to plastic, plastic to metal, plastic to plastic, or metal to metal. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. A TOTAL RIP-OFF!!!
As a woman without a drill bit for cement, I am game to try this to mount things on the outside of the house. Where was this stuff when the folks on the Titanic needed something to plug a hole?
I used it to hang up a hose holder on my house and it fell down in a few minutes. Maybe I used too much I used the whole tube. Thats what is left out of the instructions. Or maybe the tubes I bought are old because the putty crumbled off the hose hanger.
Don't waste your money.
My rear view mirror fell off my windshield, should I invest in Might Putty or not?
I used the mp to hang a hose holder outside on a brick wall. tried 3 times and gave up.
It does NOT WORK.!!!!! Anything he advertises now I will not buy.
wow! i am glad i stumbled across this page. I have two drawers that the faces keep falling off of. I've tried wood glue, nailing, screwing, duct taping, nylon medical tape, (which worked well by the way til it fell off) so i thought i'd give this a shot.. perhaps the plumbing section of the hardware store. or clamp ons? any other suggestions, other than new drawers?
I never bought Mighty Putty yet it worked for me!!!! After seeing screaming Billy Mays, my wife screamed at me to call and get the stuff. I was on the verge of doing so when I came across this page. As I read the comments to my wife, she became more and more subdued...even, at times laughing. Finally, she became apologetic for having been a female Billy Mays. Since that time, she has toned down generally. I wonder if Mighty Putty would work to close up the hole in May's face,
If anyone would like to see a video product review of Mighty Putty, go to www.asotv.info. This is a free consumer review site. The product does work, but you need to read the instructions carefully. Some have complained of things bonded to walls falling off after a short time, and apparently didn't see the part about not using it on a painted surface, as the epoxy isn't bonded to the wall, but only the paint, which isn't very strong.
Think maybe M. Morales might be a plumber? When plumbers start charging reasonable fees dork - we'll call a plumber.
I could not resist the infomercial and bought the 6 sticks. I am glad to see other sites listed here that sell the same product at a reduced price.
I think the product is easy to use and works ok.
I think the main problem is that buyers believe the "miracles" hyped on TV to sell the product.
There are several rules that apply when using any adhesive product:
Both surfaces to be bonded should be free of grease and foreign matter. Clean carefully with acetone or Naptha (lighter fluid) and let dry.
The surfaces should be roughened with abrasive cloth and re-cleaned.
In general, the surfaces should be dry. To stop a leak in a pipe, i would jam enough mighty putty into the hole in the pipe to stop the leak and put tape around the pipe to hold in place. If the leak stops , i would then clean and abrade the outside surface and apply a ring of putty around the pipe.
When glueing parts together, the two parts must be held firmly in place during the setting up period. This is hard to do by hand. Use clamps or weights , if possible.
Also, the two parts of the adhesive should be thoroughly mixed before applying.
And a caution, some plastic materials such as teflon, polyethelene, and polypropolene cannot be bonded by normal means.
Billy Mays must have some kind of routine he use on how he move his hand.Because at time the way he move his hand don't make since with what he's talking about. But after writting all that he's still my roll model
Mighty Putty helped slow a flood in my basement yesterday and saved me more money than I spent on it. Our block wall foundation sprung a leak, in mortar between two blocks, and groundwater seepage was flowing in like someone turned on a water faucet.
A piece of wood shim malleted into the hole in the mortar, covered with a giant gumball sized wad of Mighty Putty, and no more faucet.
I can't sing its praises enough. After fighting groundwater seepage for 24 hours, that leak increased the rate of seepage to a point we couldn't keep up. Our neighbors up and down the street had several feet of water in their basements; our hard work and a pinch of Mighty Putty, and we never had more than an inch or two.
Buy it if you are in a pinch, especially when it comes to leaks. IT WORKS.
I used some that a friend had bought for $20 to repair a broken piece of cast iron on a metal shear. It didn't hold. I went to the hardware store and got some JB weld for $10 and it is still crunching metal.
Besides that, I can't stand the loudmouthed bubblehead that yells out the pitches for this stuff, oxyclean, et al.
PS
The loudmouthed bubblehead on tv says it is a "permanent seal". I'd like to know what it really can PERMANENTLY seal.
I've tried Mighty Putty on four different projects and it didn't work for three of them. The projects were:
hanging metal sconces on a knock-down textured wall (didn't work)
fixing a broken ceramic cup handle (just like he does on TV) (didn't work)
hang a lightweight wooden crucifix on a knock-down textured wall (didn't work)
The one task that it did work for: hanging on old license plate on my garage wall.
I don't plan to use it for very much.
I bought a tube of this stuff from the boat store because it said it would cure under water... I had a leak in my Hot Tub and didn't want to have to drain it if posable... I used a little that wasn't much bigger than a cherry when mixed, and spread it over the crack working it in as best I could...
That was three years ago and it hasn't leaked since!!!! Also filled a screw hole that had stripped out in the fiberglass hull on my motor home.. I filled the holes, let it cure a short time worked the screw in and let it set up... It is still holding!!!
The stuff works but I wouldn't spend the money on the TV add. Got to your local boat or hardware store, get one tube for a little over $5.00. The tube I got is over three years old and still has about half of it left and it still works.

I used Mighty Putty to hang a window curtain rod. My curtain rod uses three brackets. I mighty puttied the three brackets to the wall and waited 30 minutes. After hanging the curtain rod and curtains, two brackets fell off the wall. The curtains weight 14 pounds. I'll try one more time. Next time, I will clean the wall with a wet cloth first. I'll also let the Mighty Putty set 24 hours before hanging the rod and curtains. Wish me luck!
I tried the three stick bargin as hawked by Billy. I found the putty to be very useful for repair of pottery handles, broken plastic handles on my RV doors. I keep a tube in my truck, one in my boat and one in my RV.
I wouldn't be with out it!
Nope, this stuff is worthless. I received three tubes for Christmas and, after much ado, have not been able to repair my toilet after three attempts. Billy Mays can bellow all he can, but this product is bogus and inconvenient. Two thumbs down.

I had a piece of wood at the bottom of the door Jamb that had rotted. Removed the rotted wood and made layers of mighty putty. Worked great easy to use. Trick is to let it harden for at least 24 hours. Worked great as a wood filler after the screws pulled through the wood. Mix it real well too.
this stuf is garbage i got my finger cut off using the band saw other day so i tried to put it back on with mighty puty i wait 24 hours for it to cure and it doesnt stick after that so now im short 10 dolarls and 1 finger dont waste ur money it doesnt work
this mighty putty isnt very good. its the same putty youve seen before, except this is the considering migthgy version. it isnt more putty, its just more of the name, to it. i wouldnt but this mighty putty becuase it is just not the good idea to get it. hoEP THI
