SmartDispense: Brainy washing
Press releases for clothes washers and dryers often tout the machines' efficiency or styling, but rarely do they make the following claim: "It's Almost as Easy as Sending Out the Laundry."
Music to my ears—but I'm a bit of a laundry moron, having once fried a down comforter into a queen-size cracker.
The new GE machines don't actually fold the clothes, but the drawers beneath do "store and automatically dispense detergent and fabric softener based on each load's size, soil level, water hardness and fabric or cycle type."
The drawers, shown at right, give the line its name: SmartDispense.
Adding to the smartness, the washer and dryer apparently communicate to one another, effectively nullifying the permanent press vs. delicates debate.
That feature's name: CleanSpeak.
I just love the way companies eliminate the space between two words to create a trademarked technology.
This one also has a generous capacity for a front-loader, with the ability to wash 17 pairs of jeans per load. A recently reviewed Bosch model, just to compare jeans to jeans, will do 14 pairs.
Available in summer 2008, the washer starts at $1,299; the dryer, $1,099.

Hrm, only two links to your own site in this post, what a refreshing change. Thats like almost reasonable. Course I suppose the previous "sanding week" (which consisted of what? 7 whole posts?) which had some 20 odd links in it made up for it. Come on guys, do you really need to link to the very next post that resides all of 30 pixels below the current one?
When I was a kid growing up in London, 30 years ago, we put cloths in the washer and they came out CLEAN and DRY!. I don't know how it worked but I do know that in this age of the Segways and Pocket PCs, these appliance manufacturers could easily make a single device that cleans and drys cloths. So as long as they keep swindling us with two separate machines I won't be impressed.
I want this washer even though the plastic is cheap. I had this idea a long time ago and I promised myself that I would upgrade to the brand you could pour an entire bottle of HE liquid. I'm sure it won't make consumer reports number one, but since I have over 2% of my retirement in GE, let's hope for the best; can't wait for summer to sell my '96 Kenmore on craigslist.
I can't find the dimensions of these anywhere online. Does anyone know how big they're going to be? I'm looking for something smaller than the red LG and Samsung models.
