Addressing house numbers

June 30, 2008

Address

Here's a neat layout trick "discovered" by our own Buildings and Technology Editor, Tom Baker. Since his house numbers could not fit horizontally within the decorative molding of his porch pillar, Tom had to come up with a way of accurately positioning the number plates in an alternative configuration.

He could have simply centered them vertically along the post, but with all the daily care he takes in positioning sentences and letters on the pages of This Old House magazine, Tom couldn't help but take the high road and figure out a way to spice up the design. A diagonal configuration was the challenge he took to complement the aesthetic of his welcoming entryway.

First he trimmed some regular graph paper to fit in the field of the pillar. Placing the fitted graph paper on a work table, he then positioned his house numbers on top of the grid. When Tom located the perfect spots for the numbers, he penciled a mark through each mounting hole onto the graph paper.

Returning the graph paper to the pillar, Tom was able to use it as a template and drill pilot holes through his markings. The rest was a snap. Hand nailing each plate, the numbers fell into their proper place. The precision of his handy work will aid and please the new visitor, the pizza delivery person and God forbid the ambulance driver who can't miss this handsome, visible and well mounted address.

Glad you thought of emergency workers responding, but if you cared about that you would push for a universal sign in each yard with easy to read block numerals. Drive down your street in the dark and try to find house numbers while trying to arrive in time to save someones life(with your dispatcher calling on the radio that you just passed it). Then your house numbers would be in a straight line, not diagonal, on a sign at the street preferably lighted or at least reflective.
