Be your own architect with Arcon software
The other day, I had the chance to get my hands on some of the Arcon 3D brand of software from UK-based Eleco Software Limited. The program lets you put together a floor plan and then generate a rendering of what your project — whether just a room or a whole house — will look like. See my first attempt at designing my own kitchen and dining room at left, as well as some more examples of what the program can do after the jump.
The thing I like best about the line is the range of products
available to fit the needs of both the serial, big-project DIYer and
the one-time, one-room renovator. While I could have gone with the
all-encompassing 3D Architect program (about $400), I decided to start
small and took the 3D Kitchen Designer (about $20) home instead to
tinker with on my laptop. (Unfortunately, none of the programs are
compatible with Macs as of yet, though the company's project
co-ordination manager says they're working on changing that).
My only previous experience being the free 2D Google Sketch-Up, I found that working in the 3D view was much more intuitive and I loved being able to change the flooring,
cabinets and counters with a few simple clicks. Plus, you can move back and forth from the 2D to the 3D view pretty easily, depending on whether you're more concerned with the architectural plan or the design at that moment in the process.
I had some trouble navigating the catalog of objects (paint colors, tile materials, door styles, curtains, etc.), as well as evenly setting my upper cabinets, but it was otherwise a straightforward process to put together the basic vision in my head. Now I've got visions for how my living room could look.
