Creative recycler: timberframe bench
This little wood bench from the craftsmen at the ReFind Furniture store in Portland, Oregon, reminds of something one of George Nakashima's apprentices would have made. It's not as organic as the Japanese American master's work, but it has that same emphasis on the wood's grain pattern, and a similar contemporary look. Like much of the Nakashima's furniture, the TimberLine Bench was also made from reclaimed wood. The base was constructed out of old Douglas fir beams, and the seat is old growth redwood. "The materials were 'harvested' by deconstructing Portland area residential and commercial buildings," says Kirby Jones, ReFind's store manager. Among the store's missions is to find new uses for old building materials so they don't end up in landfills. The bench is 50" long x 14"wide x 18"tall; $550 by special order at Refind Furniture.
