Dust catcher: it's in the bag

Paper bag catches drywall dust when drilling holes

Last week I installed a rather elaborate two-tier closet organizer, which required me to drill dozens of holes through the wall for screw anchors. The closet floor was carpeted and I knew it'd be virtually impossible to vacuum up all the fine powdery drywall dust.

I considered laying down a tarp, but knew from experience that dust would invariably fall behind the tarp, or worse yet, blow out in great clouds when I folded up the tarp.

So, I devised a very simple, yet effective way to catch the dust at the point of origin.

I took a small paper lunch bag and taped it to the wall directly below the hole position. As I drilled the hole, all the dust fell directly into the bag.

Then I just moved the bag to the next position, and drilled another hole. Note that you must use painter's tape--not regular masking tape--to avoid peeling off the wall paint.

At the end of the job, I carefully folded down the top of the bag and sealed it with the tape. No fuss, no muss.

I just hold a damp sponge under the drill hole with a couple of fingers of the hand that steadies the front of the drill.
