Glue-free furniture fix for a wobbly leg

July 24, 2008

furniture joint, dowel, tenon, tightener, expands wood

Living with that one wobbly chair, like the rest of us? Of course, because it's not exactly broken, just suffering one of those annoying loose joints, you figure glue will do. (Carpenter's glue and our how-to-glue tips at TOH can help you with that project.) But what if you never get around to it? I, for one, confess to a lack of time and patience, plus some not-so-neat applications, which all led me to check out this synthetic liquid alternative called Chair-Loc. It swells the loose wood tenon or dowel you put it on to tighten the joint.

Not only does it look neater, since you apply it without any gloppy white oozing, it doesn't mess up the look of a piece you like. Coolest thing is, for a 5-minute fix, you feel as if you're treating the wood to a little less abuse since it triggers its natural tendency to expand when wet and holds itself together. Wobbling solved—and for just $7 per 3 ounce tube.

Sounds good. But is it strong enough to provide a permanent fix to the problem? I hate using wood glue on my furniture.
