Oiled bronze appliances
September 25, 2008
A few weeks ago, I posted about alternatives to stainless-steel appliances. Jenn-Air's oiled bronze line can be added to that list. Although the collection isn't new, the company recently added the built-in microwave shown above and a vent hood. Oil-rubbed bronze finishes are very popular for kitchen faucets, so maybe it isn't surprising that this collection is being expanded. What do you think? Is the finish an interesting option for someone who doesn't want to default to the norm or will it look out of place in the modern kitchen?

These are stunning and are a nice alternative to stainless steel. The only concern I would have is - will these look dated 5 or 10 years from now? For all we know, these could be the modern day equivalent to the "avocado green" appliances of the 70s.
Of course I'd like to see other manufacturers step up to the plate and offer oil rubbed bronze finishes as well, because just like faucets there can be a vast assortment of different finishes that fall in this family, so it would be nice to have a wider selection.
This would be a golden alternative if they were more affordable. It would also be good to make them in a traditional design instead of "stream-lined futuristic". I like their warm tone.
We have 4 of these appliances (fridge, single oven, cooktop, and dishwasher). At the time we bought them the range hood and the microwave weren't available yet.
We love the simple, elegant look (no controls on the front of the dishwasher, no chunky icemaker on the front of the fridge). The finish is very versatile - they can compliment a modern design or look at home in rustic decor.
We paired them with natural, light maple cabinets that were glazed with a hint of a copper and a walnut quarstone countertop. We painted the kitchen walls a deep, rich olive green and have natural, light maple hardwood flooring. Our lighting fixtures are an aged bronze patina metal. To balance out the warmth of these colors we installed stainless steel faucets and used matching cabinet hardware, which ties in well with the stainless steel handles on the appliances. The sinks are a black granite composite and our small appliances are either black or stainless steel (usually a combination of both). It all goes together well and looks great.
We also worried about the trendiness of this color. But it's been available as a high-end color choice for custom appliances for a long time and it goes well with many color schemes. I can't imagine our kitchen looking any other way - it has given us a very modern, stylish kitchen with old-world colors and simple-looking appliances that fit perfectly with the character of the house (a 130 year old Victorian).
These are not commonplace yet. It will probably take 10 years for this color to be saturated into the general market. We had to order them online as there were no dealers near us that carried this line or had even seen them in person. They aren't available through the big box stores yet (most of them have never heard of it) and although I'm sure there will be competition in the future, so far no other manufacturer is making appliances in this color for the general public. Things need to become commonplace and overused before they become dated and out-of-fashion (like shoulder pads, which are making a comeback, yuck). So it will be a while before this color reaches that point, if it ever does. I mean, some people are still ordering almond/bisque appliances.
I think copper & bronze are traditional colors, as they've been around for eons. Stainless steel is a much more recent look. French blue or hot pink appliances would be trendy for a minute and they'd loose their appeal very quickly. But as both a material and a color, copper and bronze can be found in both modern products and antique items. They've been used successfully in a variety of products from ancient times through today.
Just like how stainless steel appliances has come to be thought of as a neutral color in kitchen design, I think bronze/copper appliances will eventually be used in the same way. I think the trick to any kitchen is designing a classic look that will age well throughout the years.
susan,
we are finalizing our appliance order and debating on these. What did you do for a range ? Do you have photos you would share ?

hi guys,
i used to go to London's 'ideal home show' every year before i had my baby in 2005. Europe and IMHO Germany is the the front runner, is about 7-10 years ahead of the US when it comes to kitchen trends. my German ex and i bought a home in Germany in 1992. and while i was back in Miami,fl he was busy installing SS appliances; to my horror! it took a few years to finally appreciate them. i just say to others to pick out whatever you love if you plan on staying in your home for at least 5 or more years. i think the glass front white appliances are what I'm saving for my forever home condo here in Miami. there aren't extremely expensive and i truly love them. so go and buy a pink fridge if you want!
Susan,
I love your ideas. Would you be willing to share some pictures? thanks
Does anyone have the Oiled Bronze range hood in their home?
We have the fridge, oven, dishwasher and cooktop, but the range hood had been really hard to find. Sears finally has it, but only in 36", not 30".
I renovated my kitchen last year and used Jenn Aire oiled bronze appliances. I really like them, but they do not make a smaller microwave that will fit into the space my old one is. This is the ony appliance I don't have and they don't make one. Is there anyone else that has the oiled bronze appliances?
I think this is fit for my new kitchen, the color was so perfect. Thanks for this, I buy one.
