The Vroom: A voracious vacuum cleaner

January 16, 2009

Vacuum fits inside a cabinet

It's a little troubling that I must declare this publicly, hoping that it'd be obvious, but I'm not the kind of person that gets very excited about vacuum cleaners. I'm more of a plunge router kind of guy.

With that said, I admit that I was immediately smitten when I first saw the Vroom vacuum cleaner. (Ok, maybe not smitten exactly, but I was definitely intrigued.)

It's unlike any vacuum I have ever seen: convenient, powerful, unobtrusive, quiet, and always at-the-ready for quickly cleaning up dry spills.

The Vroom is a compact, built-in vacuum cleaner designed for installation into base cabinets in kitchens, laundry rooms, bathrooms, and other high-traffic areas. It comes as a plug-in, stand-alone vacuum, or as an add-on feature to a central vacuum system.

Vroom has retractable vacuum hoseThe Vroom motor unit, which includes a 24-foot-long retractable vacuum hose, measures about 3 1/4 inches wide by 16 1/4 inches tall by 21 7/8 inches deep.

The debris collection box, which houses a filter and removable collection bag, measures about 7 1/4 inches high by 10 3/8 inches wide by 14 1/4 inches deep. It's installed right beside the motor unit to create the stand-alone Vroom unit.

The collection box is not required when connecting the Vroom to an existing central vac system.

For quick cleaning jobs it's hard to beat the Vroom: Pull out the retractable hose and the vacuum motor automatically kicks on. Clean up the spill, return the hose to the cabinet and the motor shuts off.

There's no bulky vacuum to lug about or power cord to deal with. In most cases, you'll clean up the mess in less time than it takes to just find a conventional vacuum cleaner. The Vroom ranges in price from about $249 to $349.

Maybe I'll install a Vroom in my workshop. It'll be perfect for cleaning up after my woodchip-spewing plunge router.

I learned a lot from reading this blog post. What will Dyson think of next. It is an amazing enhancement on an existing design. The price going to have to drop a bit before it’s in every home, but it is an incredible idea.

Dyson has nothing to do with VROOOM. Dyson is one of the most expensive & least effective vacuums on the market. All bagless vacuums leak the dirt you just picked up from the floor, back into the air from the seals on the vacuum where the dirt cup attaches. Bagless vacuums seemed like a good idea when they first came out....but it really is much better to keep a supply of bags for a vacuum, then to breath the dust that has leaked out, not to mention the 5-10 minutes you should spend cleaning the vacuum after each use.
