Dutch treat: Transformer fireplace

Steel freestanding fireplace for backyards

The popularity of freestanding outdoor fireplaces has grown exponentially over the past few years, especially with homeowners who have stone patios.

The most common portable fireplace styles include pot-bellied clay chimeras and wok-shaped copper fire pits. However, there's a clever new design from the Dutch fireplace manufacturer, Harrie Leenders, that will certainly capture the attention of U.S. homeowners when--and if--it hits our shores.

Fireplace converts to a barbecue grill The Lumos is an all-steel, contemporary-style wood-burning fireplace that's about 20 inches wide and 7 feet tall. The hearth is conveniently positioned at tabletop height, but what makes the Lumos truly unique is that its top half can be flipped over, transforming from a fireplace to an outdoor barbecue grill in just seconds. How cool is that?

Lumos comes with grill and butcherblock top The unit comes with a stainless-steel grill and a hardwood butcherblock top that fits onto the inverted top section to serve as a food-prep area.

As of right now, the Lumos is only available in Europe, but there are plans to export it to Canada and eventually the U.S. The price for owning the hottest-looking grill in town: a cool $2,500 to $3,000.
