Voles, begone!
My thinking behind getting two cats was that they would rid the garden of voles--small, tunnel-dwelling rodents that love to eat the bulbs and roots of plants in our garden. Well, the cats have proved worthless on that count, and while they loll in the sun, the voles are busy underground, munching away. They've killed all the lillies , the Hydrangea tree, and we can forget about trying to grow carrots or potatoes. Voles travel in tunnels, and they sometimes use ones made by moles, their insect eating cousins. We've tried traps, we've tried poisons, and the cats haven't really tried at all. The voles have been inactive throughout the colder months, but just yesterday, we saw fresh evidence of their work. Have any of you out there in blogland had any luck ridding your property of these voracious pests?

Insert a half stick of Wrigley's Spearmint gum into their burrow. They eat the gum but are uable to digest it. It'scruel but it works.

I strongly suggest using a rat trap. Today, so far, my dad has caught 2 voles in the past half hour. Bate the trap with sunflower seeds and set the trap right next to where you beleive them to be. It will work every time!
Yes. They are awful. They have been destroying my vegetable garden. However, I just got one out of my garden by flooding the tunnel. Dig around until you find the tunnel and then stick the end of a hose in. Run it for at least a half hour. I did this three times. On the third time, the vole climbed out of the hole and passed out. I let it go in the woods down the street from my house.
I'm not sure if there are more or not at this point. But it's a good start.
