DIY school
You're probably already thinking about your summer vacation. You could lie on a beach and get sun poisoning or maybe sit in the shade swatting bugs. Or you could sign up for a week-long summer class at Yestermorrow Design/Build school in the mountains of Vermont. Reading a book, magazine, or website, even watching an excellent TV show can give you a good background, but nothing beats the hands-on empirical experience you get from actually doing something. The instructors at Yestermorrow are all working professionals--builders, architects, and tradesmen--and they'll teach you how to do things right. And after your working vacation, you'll get a lot more satisfaction picking splinters out of your hands than you will scratching mosquito bites or peeling sunburn. Check out the class calendar here.
