Art or the wanton misuse of good tools?

Sugar-Post's-lobster

I was strolling through Greenport, New York last weekend, taking in some of the oldest architecture on Long Island and noticed this metal lobster outside one of the boutiques. “What a waste of a wrench” I thought. All in the name of art?

Turns out the fabricator/artist who made it, Fred Conlon of Salt Lake City, UT-based Sugar Post uses army surplus tools to make these, and his other pieces. His first creation was made out of an old fuel tank, and he’s also made a turtle out of an old army helmet after starting his shop 11 years ago. I felt a little better about things after Fred explained that he often buys factory seconds from the same manufactures that make Stanley and Craftsman tools—so whenever possible he doesn’t use perfectly good tools, like the pair of wrenches on Pinchy here, to create his work. The lobster retails for about $45.
