Stop zombie appliances attacks
Sorry for the sensationalistic headline, but this is definitely one of those products that makes me paranoid about something that I had never even thought of before. The SafetyGate prevents gadgets from coming back on and causing injury if you accidentally forget to turn them off during an unexpected power failure or circuit break. The inventor came up with the idea when sanding a floor and going farther than the cord could reach. Without thinking, he plugged the device, whose switch was still on, into a nearer outlet only to watch the sander zoom across the floor and crash into the floor. Woops!
I'm pretty clumsy and absent-minded, so this is totally something I would do, and the SafetyGate seems pretty simple. Just plug it into an outlet and then plug in an appliance (such as a toaster oven, blender, etc) or a home entertainment device (such as a TV). If power is cut, the handy device is smart enough to know if something plugged into it is still on and puts up a protective "gate" that stops the flow of electricity. To override the SafetyGate, just turn off the appliance and then turn it back on again. It costs $18.99, and the company plans to release a professional version, ideal for workshop tools, next year.
