Are you ready for 3D on your TV?

November 30, 2009

It's Cyber Monday, and if Black Friday is any indication, many of you will be clicking on cut-rate flat panel, HD-TVs for the family room. But before you do, think about whether you want to hold off until the next entertainment craze advancement hits the stores: 3D TVs. Yes, you read that right.

Most of the big-name manufacturers—including Sony, Panasonic, JVC, Samsung and Mitsubishi—have been working towards having a commercial product out on the market within the next few years.
In fact, Sony plans on debuting it's technology next year and is projecting that half of its HD-TVs will come with the in-your-face feature by 2012, according to PC World [via Gizmodo]. Check out the video above from CNN  to learn more about the trend.

Last month, I actually got to check out Panasonic's Full HD 3D Home Theater System (which is expected to be in retail stores sometime in 2010). I'll admit, it was kind of cool. The 3D images may not have been as over-the-top as the ones I experienced in my first Epcot Center 3D ride, but they were fun to see. And I can definitely see it's draw for those who enjoy action movies, for regular gamers or for kids who would love to see their favorite cartoon characters come to life. The built-in technology, with it's companion eye gear, is supposed to fix the seasick-like after-effects that were a top complaint when 3D first came out in theaters. While I was a little queasy after checking out the Panasonic system, I went in feeling under the weather, so I'm not sure if it was the system or a flu bug that was to blame.

So I am looking forward to seeing what these companies come out with... I'm just not sure if it's for me.  My understanding is you need a whole of space (at least enough for a 50-inch TV) to get the experience. And I think I would get lazy about donning the glasses just to see my favorite programs up close and personal.  But that just might be me. Is anyone out there excited at the thought of getting 3D TV in their house?
