Super sandpaper: The next generation
I love using hand tools, but power sanding is really the only way to smooth rough wood. Electric sanders aren't only faster and easier than hand sanding, they also produce a smoother, flatter surface.
I own several types of power sanders, including belt, orbital, disc-and-belt, and oscillating drum, but the one I use most often by far is my random-orbit sander. Its round pad simultaneously spins in full circles and vibrates in tiny orbits, making it useful for both heavy stock removal and for lightly knocking down a coat of varnish.
The only drawback to random-orbit sanders is that you must buy specially made, hook-and-loop (Velcro) abrasive discs, which aren't cheap. But to be honest, I wouldn't even mind the price if the darn discs didn't rip or wear out so quickly. Fortunately I may have found a solution to this problem.
Gator Finishing Products just introduced a brand-new abrasive disc for random-orbit sanders called, Gator Ultra Power Premium Series Sandpaper.
These new discs are made with zirconium oxide, one of the world's hardest manmade materials. (Remember QVC "diamonds" made of cubic zirconium? Same stuff.)
According to the manufacturer, Gator Ultra Power discs last three times longer and sand three times faster than typical aluminum oxide discs.
I tested the Gator discs on both hardwood and softwood, and on raw wood and varnished surfaces. The discs did indeed seem to cut quicker and last longer than standard discs. And they didn't "load up" or clog as quickly.
Now most of the credit certainly must go to the zirconium oxide grits, which are extremely hard and super sharp, but the discs also have extra-thick backing paper and super-strong resins that help extend the life of the abrasive.
Gator Ultra Power abrasive discs are available in four grits: 50 (very coarse), 80, 120 and 220 (very fine). They come in packs of four ($5), 12 ($12) and 40 discs ($20).
Gator also offers zirconium oxide sandpaper in sheets, belts and large discs.
