There's a new shovel in town
Winter may only be a day old, but if you live in the snowbelt, it's never too early to think about snow removal.
Like many homeowners, I use a snowblower to clear snow from my driveway and walkways. But there are plenty of places where I still use a snow shovel. For example, I typically shovel off the front porch, rear brick patio, and around the mailbox and other areas too restricted for the snowblower.
However, my old metal snow shovel is pretty beaten up, so I went looking for a replacement and made a most pleasant discovery: Ames True Temper--the country's oldest hand-tool manufacturer--just introduced the SnoBoss, a radically designed and easy-to-use snow shovel.
The SnoBoss features an extra-large 26-inch-wide shovel blade made from high-quality resins. The bottom edge of the blade is fitted with a durable wear-strip for long life.
However, what makes the SnoBoss really unique is its aluminum handle, which has an end grip and two different mid-grip locations. As a result, you can choose the hand placements that best suit the snow depth and density, and provide the optimal back posture regardless of whether you're lifting, pushing, or throwing the snow.
And, the SnoBoss shovel can be turned over and used to scrape snow from steps, porches and other smaller areas.
The SnoBoss is available at home centers and other retailers for about $37.

where can I find the SNOBOSS I live in Culpeper,va
Hey Greg, I was told by the folks at Ames True Temper that the SnoBoss is available at most Home Depot and Lowe's stores. I'm not sure how widely this product is distributed, but hopefully you'll find it locally. Good luck!--JT
Since winter is approaching you should prepare all your snow removal equipment by using Clean Deck Graphite. Snow blower outlet chutes and deflectors, scraper bars, shave plates and augers, snow plow blades and snow shovels should all be coated with Clean Deck Graphite to prevent build-up of wet snow. Snow blower outlet chutes tend to block when used with wet snow and should be coated with Clean Deck Graphite to allow smooth flow. Clean Deck Graphite is used to stop grass from sticking or clumping to lawn mower decks and also works great on snow removal equipment. You only have to apply Clean Deck once a year for regular mowing and snow removal. The other non stick options have to be applied every time you mow the grass or remove snow with your equipment. Clean up is easy as nothing will stick to your equipment if coated with Clean Deck Graphite. More information about Clean Deck Graphite can be found at www.CleanDeck.net or at www.WilmarGraphite.net
I bought mine at BJs for $25. Also saw it on Amazon for $43. Well worth the money. Despite the large amount of snow you can lift, the shape really does make lift and tossing less strenuous. Works well pushing lighter snow as well. Feels like it is durable and well made.
