How are they controlled? Do you have to carry some sort of device with you (or go find it)? And, if you use the remote to turn on the switch, do all three turn on?

Sorry, not enough info. Not your fault, though - buy.com just doesn't tell us ANYTHING about these.

Are they radio controlled or infra-red (which would need "line of sight")?

I have one of these already and I think they are handy. They use a small wireless remote(non infra-red). We live in an older home and our spare room doesn't have a ceiling light so we have a lamp pluged in across the room and the remote on a table as soon as you walk in the room. Really works out great.
